How we can help

Explore hip care at FYZICAL Woburn

Explore some of the concerns we assess and how care can be tailored to your activities and goals.

Piriformis syndrome

The piriformis is a muscle deep in the buttock. When it is irritated, it may compress the sciatic nerve and cause buttock pain or sciatica-type symptoms. Lower back problems and other conditions can cause similar symptoms. Your assessment considers your back and hip together.

Trochanteric bursitis (lateral hip pain)

Trochanteric bursitis means irritation of a small fluid-filled sac (bursa) on the outside of the hip. It is part of the broader picture of lateral hip pain, often called greater trochanteric pain syndrome (GTPS), which may also involve the gluteal tendons that connect buttock muscles to bone. An individualized plan may include adjusting load and activity and building strength over time.

Request an appointment

Hip osteoarthritis

With hip osteoarthritis, the cartilage in the joint changes over time. Exercise cannot reverse or repair cartilage; care focuses on managing symptoms and working toward better function through tailored mobility and strength work. Your therapist reviews your progress alongside care from your doctor, who can discuss other options, including surgery when appropriate.

Request an appointment

Total hip replacement

In a total hip replacement, the damaged surfaces of the ball and socket of the hip joint are replaced with artificial components. Rehabilitation is individualized and follows your surgeon's movement and weight-bearing restrictions and walking aid instructions. Your plan supports strength, mobility and personal goals, with progress reviewed and activity adjusted as your recovery allows.

Request an appointment

Your assessment guides an individualized plan. Your therapist discusses how physical therapy and any care from your other healthcare professionals fit together.

Our approach to care

Hip-focused treatment, paced to you

Hip problems can affect how you walk, use stairs, get in and out of the car, sleep and stay active. Based on your assessment, your evidence-informed program may combine tailored exercise, movement practice and practical guidance to help manage symptoms and improve what you can do. Treatment is adjusted to your assessment, response and goals.

Tolerable movement and pacing

Your therapist helps you find hip movements and activity levels you can tolerate, with the aim of keeping you moving without pushing through worsening pain. Guidance on pacing and gradually building activity can help you manage symptoms day to day.

Tailored mobility and strengthening

Exercises are chosen to work on hip movement and the strength of the muscles around the hip, including the gluteal muscles. Intensity is adjusted to your abilities and stage of recovery, with any surgical or medical precautions taken into account.

Everyday activity guidance

Your therapist may suggest ways to adjust walking, stairs, sitting, lying positions and work tasks, and discuss how to use any walking aid your surgical or medical team recommended. You can review which adjustments fit your routine and refine them around your symptoms, movement and goals.

Support between appointments

A manageable home program helps you keep working toward your goals. Your therapist explains how much to do, how to adjust when your hip flares and when to stop an exercise and seek advice.

We review changes in your symptoms and everyday function—not just a pain score—and adjust your program as needed. Tell your therapist about new or worsening hip, back or leg symptoms; some changes need medical review rather than an exercise adjustment.

    We explain

We explain the findings, answer your questions and discuss next steps, including another healthcare professional’s input when needed.

05 — Questions

A few answers before you get started

How quickly can I get an appointment?

New-patient evaluations are often available within two business days. Call or submit a request to check current availability.

Do I need a referral?

You can contact us without one. We will help check what is needed for your visit and your insurance plan.

Do I need a diagnosis first?

No. Tell us what you are experiencing. Your physical therapist will assess your concerns and discuss appropriate next steps.

Will my insurance cover my visits?

We are in-network with Medicare, Medicare Railroad, Mass General Brigham, UnitedHealthcare, Humana, Aetna, TRICARE, BCBS and Harvard Pilgrim. Services for other plans, excluding Medicaid, are out-of-network and subject to clinic benefit verification. We are not a Medicaid provider. Coverage depends on your specific plan. We can help check your benefits and explain estimated costs before your visit. Benefit verification does not guarantee payment.

How many visits will I need?

That depends on your assessment, goals and progress. Your therapist will discuss a recommended plan and review it as treatment progresses.

Is physical therapy right for my hip?

Your therapist assesses your concerns, explains how physical therapy may help and discusses any medical input needed before or alongside care.

What if an exercise is painful?

Some discomfort can be expected, but do not push through pain that is getting worse. Stop and tell your therapist so the exercise can be adjusted or your hip reviewed.

How long does hip recovery take?

Your recovery plan reflects your condition, activities and goals. Your therapist reviews your progress and discusses what to expect; recovery times vary.

I had a hip replacement or hip surgery. Can I come to you?

Yes. Rehabilitation is individualized and follows your surgeon's movement and weight-bearing restrictions and walking aid instructions. There are no universal precautions or timelines, so bring any protocol you were given. About hip replacement

Is my sciatica coming from my piriformis?

Piriformis irritation can affect the sciatic nerve. Similar symptoms can also come from the lower back or other causes, which your assessment considers. An assessment helps clarify what may be involved. About piriformis syndrome

Can exercise reverse hip arthritis?

Exercise cannot reverse or repair cartilage. The goal of tailored mobility and strength work is to manage symptoms and support everyday function. Your therapist reviews how you respond, and your doctor can discuss other options, including surgery when appropriate. See hip osteoarthritis.

Is pain on the outside of my hip bursitis?

It may involve the bursae, the gluteal tendons or both, and other causes are possible. Your therapist assesses your symptoms and discusses individualized load and activity adjustments. About lateral hip pain

Can I contact you for a family member?

Yes. Enter your own contact information and let us know you are contacting us for someone else.
