How we can help

Explore back care at FYZICAL Woburn

Explore common back concerns and how an assessment can guide care around your symptoms, activities and goals.

Low back pain

Pain in the lower back is very common and often has no single identifiable cause. If you are looking for back pain relief, physical therapy for low back pain may include tailored exercise, movement practice and guidance on staying active at a level you can tolerate.

Request an appointment

Sciatica and sciatic nerve pain

Sciatica describes pain, tingling or numbness that travels from the lower back into the buttock or leg, often related to irritation of the sciatic nerve. Leg pain can also have other causes, which your therapist considers during assessment. Looking for sciatica relief? Start with an assessment. Your therapist checks your symptoms and discusses care options for your symptoms, including physical therapy and medical review when needed.

Request an appointment

Arthritis-related back stiffness

Age-related imaging changes are common. Your therapist considers them alongside your symptoms and examination findings. Your assessment guides movement and strength work aimed at helping you manage everyday tasks alongside care from your doctor.

Rehabilitation after back surgery

Our approach to care

Back-focused treatment, paced to you

Back pain can affect how you sit, bend, lift, walk and sleep. Based on your assessment, your evidence-informed program may combine tailored exercise, movement practice and guidance on pacing and self-management to help you manage symptoms and stay active. Prolonged bed rest is generally not recommended. Your therapist selects movement and exercise around your assessment, abilities and response. Treatment is adjusted to your assessment, response and goals.

Tolerable movement and pacing

Your therapist helps you find movements and activity levels you can tolerate, with the aim of keeping you moving without pushing through worsening pain. Guidance on pacing and gradually building activity can help you manage symptoms day to day.

Tailored exercise

Exercises are chosen around your assessment, preferences and goals, and may include strengthening, mobility or general activity. Intensity is adjusted to your abilities and stage of recovery, with any surgical or medical precautions taken into account.

Self-management and everyday activity

Your therapist may discuss ways to approach sitting, bending, lifting and work tasks, and how to plan for flare-ups. You can work together on practical self-management steps, reviewing and adjusting them as your symptoms and activity needs change.

Support between appointments

A manageable home program helps you keep working toward your goals. Your therapist explains how much to do, how to adjust when your back flares and when to stop an exercise and seek advice.

We review changes in your symptoms and everyday function—not just a pain score—and adjust your program as needed. Tell your therapist about new or worsening back or leg symptoms; some changes need medical review rather than an exercise adjustment.

Know what to expect from the start

  1. Step 1

    We listen

Tell us when your back pain began, any injury or surgery, what makes it better or worse, any leg symptoms and how it affects sitting, bending, walking, work and sleep. We discuss your health history and goals.

  2. Step 2

    We assess

Your therapist checks how you move, your strength and how symptoms affect everyday tasks. Your therapist explains the findings and discusses care options and any additional medical input needed.

  3. Step 3

    We explain

We explain the findings, answer your questions and discuss next steps, including another healthcare professional’s input when needed.

  4. Step 4

    We plan together

We agree on goals and discuss the recommended approach, including whether to begin treatment that day.

What should I bring?

Bring your insurance information, medication list and any referral, imaging reports or surgical instructions, including any back precautions. Wear comfortable clothing you can move in.

Already have a diagnosis or referral?

Bring it with you. Your therapist will review the information and assess how the problem affects you now. The need for imaging is a clinical decision based on your history and examination; it is not routinely needed for back pain.

05 — Questions

A few answers before you get started

How quickly can I get an appointment?

New-patient evaluations are often available within two business days. Call or submit a request to check current availability.

Do I need a referral?

You can contact us without one. We will help check what is needed for your visit and your insurance plan.

Do I need a diagnosis first?

No. Tell us what you are experiencing. Your physical therapist will assess your concerns and discuss appropriate next steps.

Will my insurance cover my visits?

We are in-network with Medicare, Medicare Railroad, Mass General Brigham, UnitedHealthcare, Humana, Aetna, TRICARE, BCBS and Harvard Pilgrim. Services for other plans, excluding Medicaid, are out-of-network and subject to clinic benefit verification. We are not a Medicaid provider. Coverage depends on your specific plan. We can help check your benefits and explain estimated costs before your visit. Benefit verification does not guarantee payment.

How many visits will I need?

That depends on your assessment, goals and progress. Your therapist will discuss a recommended plan and review it as treatment progresses.

Is physical therapy right for my back?

Your therapist assesses your concerns, explains how physical therapy may help and discusses any medical input needed before or alongside care.

What if an exercise is painful?

Some discomfort can be expected, but do not push through pain that is getting worse. Stop and tell your therapist so the exercise can be adjusted or your symptoms reviewed.

How long does back pain take to improve?

Your recovery plan reflects your condition, activities and goals. Your therapist reviews your progress and discusses what to expect; recovery times vary.

I had back surgery. Can I come to you?

Yes, when your surgeon advises rehabilitation. Your care follows your surgeon's guidance, precautions and restrictions. Bring any protocol or restrictions you were given.

Can I contact you for a family member?

Yes. Enter your own contact information and let us know you are contacting us for someone else.
